Re-instated bishop Richard Williamson denies the holocaust on video

Holy. Fuck. Literally.

Can anyone really believe this shit?

Particularly frustrating having just finished reading the wonderful "Graphic Novel" (comic book?) Maus - these comments are not even amusingly ignorant.

  1. How someone can deny something that happened in living memory, that has massive documentation supporting it, and the people doing it bragged about it.

  2. I know. And even if he _was_ right, it's really a case of splitting hairs over what happened. I need to find out more about the context, but just discussing it in this way seems bad enough!

But, as you say, he just ignores the references. The fact that the word for "Shower" in German is now different since the holocaust is enough in itself - the evil connotations of people being tricked into thinking a gas chamber was a shower was enough to CHANGE THE GERMAN DICTIONARY. What more do you need?!

  3. A copy of a comment from PZ's blog

But seriously, this is actually really worrying. Where are all the Catholics defending their leader's decision to reinstate this man? Where are all the Christians apologising for this person's comments representing a branch of their faith?
Just not saying that you disagree with someone is, in this case, incredibly offensive!
    Cheers

  5. Benedict,

what was the german word for shower then and how has it changed? The gaschambers were marked as 'Duschraum' and a shower in german still is a 'Dusche'.

  6. I believe the gas chambers were labelled "Brausebad" (shower room), but this was changed to (as you say) "Dusche", a derivation of the French "douche", after the war.

I have a photo somewhere as evidence if necessary!

  7. PS I think this was at Dachau, and I'm not German myself, and I don't speak German very well, so please excuse me if I've got it wrong.

  9. Williamson has issued a public apology:

    ---
To His Eminence Cardinal Castrillón Hoyos

    Your Eminence

Amidst this tremendous media storm stirred up by imprudent remarks of mine on Swedish television, I beg of you to accept, only as is properly respectful, my sincere regrets for having caused to yourself and to the Holy Father so much unnecessary distress and problems.

For me, all that matters is the Truth Incarnate, and the interests of His one true Church, through which alone we can save our souls and give eternal glory, in our little way, to Almighty God. So I have only one comment, from the prophet Jonas, I, 12:

"Take me up and throw me into the sea; then the sea will quiet down for you; for I know it is because of me that this great tempest has come upon you."

Please also accept, and convey to the Holy Father, my sincere personal thanks for the document signed last Wednesday and made public on Saturday. Most humbly I will offer a Mass for both of you.

    Sincerely yours in Christ

    +Richard Williamson

  10. He apologized for causing distress and problems, not for being an ignorant douchenut.
